A construction risk assessment covers work that changes every week, on a site shared with people you do not employ, in conditions nobody controls entirely. That is why the generic site-wide assessment fails so reliably: it is written once, describes the project rather than the work, and is out of date by the second phase. The assessments that survive on a construction site are activity-based, short, and paired with the method statement for the same activity, so that the judgement and the plan move together.
Assess activities, not the site
One assessment for a project produces a document that is simultaneously too long to read and too general to use. One per activity produces documents a supervisor can actually brief from: this excavation, this lift, this hot work, this work at height on this elevation. It also makes revision cheap, because when the sequence for one activity changes you revise one short document rather than reopening a project-wide one everybody has already signed.
The interfaces are the construction-specific part
On a construction site most of what can harm your people is being done by somebody else: deliveries, other trades overhead, a scaffold you did not erect, services somebody else isolated. A construction assessment that only considers your own activity has assessed half the risk. Naming the interfaces, and what has to be true about them before your work starts, is the difference between an assessment that reads as competent and one that reads as a form.
It has to feed the method statement or it will not be read
On site, the assessment is not the working document; the method statement is. If the controls in the assessment do not appear as steps in the sequence, they will not happen, however well they are worded. Write the two together, check each control against the stage that implements it, and the assessment stops being paperwork and starts being the reason the sequence has the shape it does.
Count them before you promise them
A construction contractor with a dozen activity types and a rolling programme generates far more assessment traffic than a fixed workplace does, and most of it is revision rather than first writing. Do I need a separate risk assessment for each construction activity?
In practice yes, and it makes the work easier rather than harder. Activity-based assessments are shorter, briefable, and cheap to revise when a sequence changes, whereas a single project assessment ages badly and is rarely read by the people doing the work.
Who is responsible for risk assessments on a construction site?
Each contractor assesses their own work; the principal contractor coordinates and monitors, and the client and designers have duties of their own earlier in the process. Nobody assesses on your behalf, and a principal contractor accepting your pack does not transfer your duty to them.
How does a construction risk assessment relate to the construction phase plan?
The plan is the principal contractor's document for the project as a whole; your assessments and method statements describe your work within it. They feed the plan and are referenced by it, and neither replaces the other.
